North American Series heating up, Register for Ottawa Inline Skating Festival

With big events coming up and big points up for grabs, the 2010 NROC season is heating up.

Headed into the September 5th Ottawa Inline Skating Festival & September 11th Northshore Inline Marathon, a number of Canadian skaters are either atop of their division or in the running for strong placements.

CAN Fund supports Peter Doucet

Mississauga’s Peter Doucet is among 190 Canadian athletes who recently received $6000 in support from Canadian Athletes Now Fund.

The organization has been critical in supporting Canadian athletes in their Olympic journey. Past recipients include Olivier Jean and Canada’s famous skeleton racer Jon Montgomery.

The fund, which supports Canadian amateur athletes, has raised over $11 million since its creation. All donations to CAN Fund are tax deductible.

A number of roller speed skaters & roller figure skaters applied for support from CAN Fund and are currently on the waiting list.

Canadian Master score NROC points at Eastern Seaboard Series race

Canadian Master & Veteran skaters Herb Gayle & Constant Montpellier posted excellent results at this past weekend’s Eastern Seaboard Series #4 in Trexlertown, PA. The competition was also part of the NROC, a series of North American races. Both skaters competed in the Pro Master/ Veteran’s race, with Gayle finished 2nd and Montpellier finishing 4th overall in the race.

In the Pro Junior/ Senior Men & Women’s races, Morgane Echardour finished one spot shy of the podium in 4th place while Peter Doucet finished in 8th place. Echardour redeemed herself in the 1000-meter time-trial, finishing 1st amongst female skaters while Doucet claimed 2nd overall in the time-trial.

Gratuit pour tout le monde. Plein de prix de présence de K2, Rollerblade et 24h Roller Montréal seront distribués. Cette journée est aussi le rassemblement post 24h officiel.

Début de la session automne, jeudi 2, samedi 4 et dimanche 5 septembre seront les premiers cours de la session de 2 mois.

New Brunswick’s Nadine Currie Jackson wins in Indianapolis

New Brunswick’s Nadine Currie Jackson, who skates for USA team Asphalt Beach, won the women’s race at the Southeastway Park Criterium Inline Marathon in Indianapolis.

Toronto’s Herb Gayle finished 4th overall in the race, which is part of the NROC series.

The women’s winner, Nadine Currie Jackson, said the struggle for her was against pain and fatigue. “It was a grunt-fest,” said the 39-year-old from Fredericton, New Brunswick.

Thousands of skaters roll at the 24 Hours Roller Montreal

This past weekend, thousands of skaters took to Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in the 7th annual 24 Hours Roller Montreal. Over 100 teams took to the start of the ever-growing event.

The event attracted skaters from across North America as well as overseas. This year’s event raised over $30000 in support of Quebec’s Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada.

2010 Olympic Champion Olivier Jean acted as spokesperson for the event. He was part of this year’s fastest team, Apex Racing Skates – Il Peloton. The team’s roster also included past Olympic Champion Mathieu Turcotte, USA’s Olympic Silver Medalist Travis Jayner, 2010 Canadian Olympic Champion Mathieu Giroux, Canadian 500-meter record holder Steve Robillard, and a host of other strong inline skaters.

Thousands of skaters set for 24 Hour Relay in Montreal, Olympic medalists lace-up

Thousands of skaters from across the world are descending upon Montreal this weekend for the annual 24 Hours Roller Montreal.

The event will be under way on Saturday at 2pm and concludes 24-hours later on Sunday at 2pm. Teams ranging from 1 to 10 skaters will relay throughout the day and night while completing laps around Montreal’s smooth and scenic Gilles Villeneuve Circuit.

The event will being together skaters from all the great disciplines of speed skating; long track, short track, and roller. Skaters expected to lace up for the event include 2010 Olympic medalists in short track & long track speed skating; Olivier Jean (Canada), Travis Jayner (USA), and Mathieu Giroux (Canada) as well addition past Olympic medalists.

With a village featuring food, vendors, music, fun, and a beautiful view of the late-night fireworks, the 2010 event is expected to be a really fun one for all and a continued boost for skating.
