Skaters rolling back the clock

Posted by Peter Doucet on September 20, 2011

Alfred (Fred) St.-Aubin and Rob Paul love the old eight-wheel drive, four on the floor under each foot. Thunder in their soles, lightning at their heels.

They’re like teenagers again, burning … not rubber … but polyurethane. What roller skate wheels are made of now. Used to be wood. That’s not all that’s changed.

Skating on Wheels- Article on COC

Posted by Peter Doucet on August 19, 2011

With the XVI Pan American Games coming up this October, a unique group of teams will represent Canada in Guadalajara, Mexico. All summer long, we profile the nine sports in which Canada competes only at the Pan American Games.

The next time speed skating and figure skating are held at a multi-sport event, it won’t involve sharp blades on a sheet of ice.

When the Pan American Games open in Guadalajara this October, Team Canada will be skating on wheels instead, as part of the Roller Sports competition program. It’s the highest level the sport will be contested – unlike its winter cousin, which has been part of the Olympic Winter Games for a number of years – but that doesn’t mean there are vast differences.

Local Roller Skaters qualify for the USA Roller Sports National Championship

Posted by Peter Doucet on July 21, 2011

Four young Calgarians to compete against the best in North America.

Calgary, Alberta (July 21, 2011) – Four local roller skaters will be among more than 2,000 competitors at the USA Roller Sports National Championship in Fort Wayne, Indiana this weekend. Rahul Duggi, Kaylee Smith, Natasha Bogucki and Marie Queenan from the Calgary Artistic Roller Sports Club qualified for the largest roller skating competition in North America at the US Northwest Regional competition in Portland, Oregon in June.

“There are only a handful of Canadians competing at these championships so it is a significant achievement to have four skaters entered,” says Kim Argento, coach at the Calgary Artistic Roller Sports Club. “They have practiced on average of 12 hours a week in preparation for this high level competition and we are excited to see how they compare to the best skaters in North America.”

Confidence and Success, La confiance et le succès

Confidence and Success

La confiance et le succès La version française suit

In an interview just after retiring from freestyle moguls skiing, Olympic Gold and Silver medalist, Jenn Heil had this to say:

“It’s funny that my greatest moments are at the start lines, not the finish lines. It’s never been about how many medals I can win. Of course, we define success by medals but for me it’s always been about testing my limits.”

Recently I was considering success and confidence, and I began to wonder; – is this a chicken-or-egg conundrum? Which comes first, success or confidence? Do you need to be successful to be confident? Or – do you need to be confident to be successful?

SportAccord Editorial

Posted by Peter Doucet on April 21, 2011

Dear friends of rollersports.org

Like every year, back from SportAccord, I am writing to update you on important changes, that the world of international sport is living.

In the same direction are the many meetings that have characterized our efforts in London and that have been stretched, from an institutional perspective, to keep Roller Sports in the leading international sport events.

A certainly interesting meeting concerned the SportAccord World Artistic Games. The first event will take place at the end of 2012 and will involve about 800 athletes in five days of sports with musical entertainment, with the participation of seven sports: Figure Roller Skating, Artistic Cycling, Indoor Musical Aeronautics, Dancing, Gymnastics, Synchronised Swimming and Diving.

There will be World Games in Cali 2013 and Pan American Games in Toronto 2015 with Roller Sports participation in these two world-class sporting events.

Finally we have started a series of contacts for the promotion and the spread of Roller Sports, that will surely reach results in an intense work season.

We met representatives of cities and countries interested in hosting high-level events of Roller Sports, able to attract a large and varied audience. We have also made contact with distribution agencies, that have shown a great interest in the possibility of transmitting images of roller sports by their partner.

During the elective assembly of SportAccord Mr. Verbruggen was confirmed as President; gave compliments for the work done so far and we have assured our support for his future work.

I take this opportunity to send to you all a warm sport hug.
